Exploring Avenues in Mass Timber
Mississippi State University
“The “big idea” was to design a structure that pushes the boundaries of timber in terms of applications, durability, and aesthetics. It is meant to challenge the norms and raise the bar for what a timber building could be. This building is designed to be an archetype for stakeholders of the construction industry to look up to and position timber as not merely another structural material that is hidden away but something that can be proudly displayed, adored and celebrated!
The whole building rests on top of a waffle lattice made of Eastern White Pine Cross Laminated timber beams. This waffle sits on 7 tripods that are CNC routed from a laminated block of “NELMA Finish Grade E.W. Pine timber. The same kind of Eastern White Pine is also used on the millwork and furniture everywhere inside the building.”
